Autism Hour

Wed 9th October 2019

We are supporting The National Autistic Society's Autism Hour on Wednesday 9th October at 10:00am.

What is The National Autistic Society's Autism Hour? For autistic people, the world can seem full of too much information - and too little understanding. More than 1 in 100 of the population have been diagnosed with autism. Over 99% of people have heard of autism, but only 16% of autistic people feel the public understand them.

So, on Wednesday 9th October at 10am, Newlands Shopping Centre is holding an Autism Hour and taking simple steps for 60 minutes that lead to a more autism-friendly world;

- Turning down music and other noise: Noise is a common barrier to autistic people.

- Dimming the lights: Bright lights can be overwhelming.

- Sharing information about autism with employees: We don't expect everyone to be an autism expert, but everyone should try to understand autism.

Over 38,000 Autism Hours have been completed over the past two years across various businesses, including Newlands Shopping Centre’s retailers.
